de Appel has been collaborating with LI-MA (formerly known as MonteVideo, and before that Netherlands Media Art Institute) since 1992 on various projects. LI-MA preserves, maintains and distributes the video collection of de Appel.

De Appel video collection contains mainly registrations of performances, events and projects. Most of the video and audio material has been digitalized and excerpts can be found on de Appel’s website. Short descriptions and fragments of the videos can also be found on the website of LI-MA. LI-MA is our partner in conservation and distribution of de Appel’s video collection (up to 1995). Videoworks that have been shown in de Appel might be available for in-house research, depending on the wishes of the makers.

In 2022 to 2024, de Appel is partner of LI-MA’s Collaborative Infrastructure for Sustainable Access to Digital Art project, which highlights the shared infrastructure and knowledge building for museum collections, artists and heritage networks, on the long term preservation of digital art. Eighteen parties are working together to prevent the loss of digital artworks, to safeguard the knowledge to preserve them and to update the technical infrastructure needed. Collaborative Infrastructure for Sustainable Access to Digital Art is a practice-based research project that focuses on the needs of complex digital artworks from Dutch collections and their caretakers. The project has urgent goals: to save digital artworks for future generations to experience, and to commonly develop and share knowledge to make this happen.

Support LI-MA
LI-MA is in need of your support to continue its vital work. Until now, LI-MA has annually invested in its infrastructure and tasks by securing project funding. In the Netherlands, the heritage sector lacks specific regulations or categories for the collection development, research, management, and preservation of media art and digital culture. While many artists and heritage institutions benefit from their specialised expertise and tools to build their in-house knowledge, LI-MA, the leading institution in this field, despite a positive assessment, does not qualify for funding since its not seen as a presentation or developing institution.
