Watching the Debris is a score conceived by Ola Hassanain. Named after “the watcher” of agricultural communities in Sudan, which protects water for a community in the context of state and infrastructural failure — the score is informed by disembodied, matter-less territory of catastrophe, where observation summons a form of power. Permanence does not have matter anymore, but rather generates a different type of debris. This debris is not a representation, but a carrier.
Ola Hassanain works between Amsterdam and Khartoum, focusing on developing spatial literacy through the idea of ‘space as discourse’, an expanded notion of space that encompasses political and environmental questions.
