West Side Tori's

The West Side Tori' s neighbourhood newspaper gives kids from Amsterdam the chance to share their own interests and stories with the rest of the city. The newspaper is the result of a series of inspiring sessions at school, led by a professional storyteller, journalist and photographer. The newspapers are packed with tips for local activities, personal recommendations for the best places to eat, movie reviews and even a specially mapped out art route through Amsterdam Nieuw-West. You'll also find interviews, recipes, fashion editorials, puzzles and much more.

In the summer of 2022, the first edition of West Side Tori's was published. It was a special edition put together by the pupils of the Huiberschool in Amsterdam Nieuw-West under the guidance of Jaleesa Clows and de Appel's curator of education David Smulders. The newspaper was available for free at various locations in Nieuw-West.

The second edition appeared in April 2024, this time created in collaboration with pupils of OBS De Toekomst; children from 8 to 12 from Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Together with Jaleesa Clows, Kymani Ceder and David Smulders, they worked on a new newspaper, with a circulation of 1,000 copies.

In West Side Tori's, the children are given full ownership of the content. They have the freedom to decide what goes into the newspaper, to work from their interests, and from what art and culture they find important. In addition to their local tips and personal favorites, each edition contains another inspiring mix of interviews, recipes, fashion reports, and a unique art route through Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Children's perspective on art and culture is a special and valuable addition for everyone in the city, regardless of age and background.
