The Play Kit

"De Appel is not a real apple to eat but it is an art space where we show art made by artists of today. You can compare it a bit to a museum but slightly different. Here, de Appel offers artists time and space to ask important questions and tell stories with artworks.

Several artworks together in one space makes an exhibition. Use the Play Kit to playfully discover an exhibition at de Appel, but also look further in the kit, because there you can find tips for making your own mini exhibition in this box! Who knows, maybe the Appel will love your mini-exhibition so much that they'll want to show it in the big one too!"

More about the Play Kit
In celebration of Museum Kids Week, de Appel is launching a Play Kit for children and adults! With the kit, we want to encourage different ways of learning to become wise through play. The relationship our bodies have with art and our immediate environment are central to the Play Kit. Thus, the kit itself is a model of our physical exhibition space, which used to function as a school auditorium.

The Play Kit consists of two parts. With the assignments in the kit, you can playfully discover de Appel's exhibitions. You do this together with the person you visit the exhibition with, be it a parent, teacher, sibling or friend. This allows for different perspectives. With the Play Kit, we want to stimulate all the senses to look, move, listen, smell, and tell stories with the whole body.

As a second part, the kit allows you to create your own mini exhibition. In the kit, you can imagine a whole new world yourself. What would it look like, who would live there and what would happen? Make up your own rules and stories that you think are important to show. This and many more questions to help you create your own exhibition.

Practical information
The Play Kit was devised by de Appel's Curator of Education, David Smeulders, and developed together with our Education intern, Phylicia Gilijamse. The drawings in the play kit were made by Phylicia Gilijamse and Marcin Klazes. For children, the Apple is free. The Speelkit is available in Dutch at the Appel's reception and costs five euros. All proceeds go towards the development of new Education programmes.
