Kunstklassen at Comenius Lyceum

02.12.2019–17.03.2020
Jacob Geelstraat 38, Amsterdam

Kunstklassen originated as a direct response to the request from Comenius Lyceum (a high school for 12-18 year olds) in Amsterdam Nieuw-West to incorporate more contemporary art into their curriculum. The programme enacts this by placing contemporary art objects from de Appel’s archive directly into the classrooms.

From 1 December 2019 until 9 March 2020 the following artworks will be on view:
Rood Wit Blauw (2012) by Yuri Veerman in the aula.
Brinco (2005) by Judi Werthein in the social studies classroom.
Journey Along the equator (1983) by Johan Cornelissen in the geography classroom.
De Enschedese School in the language classroom.

With the artworks, the students investigate social issues such as migration, travel, language, identity, as well as political and social structures in our society. Together with the Storyteller Adnan Atik the students collect stories in relation to the artworks and create a podcast. The podcast will be available for all the students, parents and other visitors to the school. Also, the teachers will play a central role in integrating the artworks into their curricula.
