Solidariteit is uitgegroeid tot een van de meest gehoorde strijdkreten in de kunsten, waarmee kunstenaars en activisten zich aan elkaar verbinden in een strijd tegen sociaal en economisch onrecht, gewelddadigheid, klimaatrampen en andere maatschappelijke problemen. Waarom is solidariteit zo'n aantrekkelijk alternatief? Welke vorm van solidariteit laten zich gelden in de kunstpraktijk? Wie is solidair met wie, en waarom? Tijdens Shaping Solidarity in the Arts onderzoeken we de historische en theoretische dimensies van solidariteit in de kunst en verbinden deze aan perspectieven van kunstenaars in de praktijk. Gezamenlijk zullen we meer begrip en kennis opdoen over wat solidariteit in de kunst is, of zou kunnen zijn.

Dit evenement wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met Valiz en Platform BK, en zal plaatsvinden bij de Appel. Sprekers en begeleiders zijn onder anderen: Eszter Szakács, Lara Khaldi, het collectief Mirror Soup Kitchen, kunstenaars-collectief Kukhnia, Rosa te Velde, Gizem Üstüner, Jue Yang, Radio Alhara, and Art Goss.

The collective Mirror Soup Kitchen (Jasper van den Berg, Jet Sanders and Roel Wouters) and activist artist collective Kukhnia (online, operating in Lviv) will cook and serve soup to everyone present. While the collectives and participants make sure together that everyone gets a meal, the collective will introduce their collaboration.

Both contributors to the Solidarity Reader, Eszter and Lara will critically discuss historical examples of art and solidarity as well as different models of institutional and non institutional forms of solidarity.

What does solidarity mean to you? Table discussions on forms of solidarity.
During the meal, a conversation will be initiated around the question: what is the role and meaning of solidarity in your practice? These conversations will be facilitated by solidarity organizers from the Dutch arts. Notes will be taken by dedicated Harvesters.

Valiz is an Amsterdam-based independent publishing house in the field of art, theory, critique, design, and urban culture. Valiz has published the Art & Solidarity Reader: Radical Actions, Politics and Friendships, edited by Katya García-Antón, in collaboration with OCA, Office for Contemporary Art Norway. Shaping Solidarity in the Arts will be the book launch of this publication.

Platform BK researches the role of art in society, takes action for better art policy, and promotes solidarity in the arts. In September of 2022, Platform BK organized a three-day Solidarity Camp in collaboration with Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons, Cultural Workers Unite, Engagement Arts NL, Fossil Free Culture NL, Tools for the Times, and Salwa Foundation. Shaping Solidarity in the Arts builds on lessons learned and friends made during this three-day event.

De Appel is a contemporary arts centre located in Broedplaats De Lely. De Appel makes time and space for artists and allies to pose vital questions. The meaning of solidarity is one of those questions. Lara Khaldi, the artistic director of De Appel, brings along experiences as a former member of the curatorial team of documenta fifteen and has contributed to the Art & Solidarity Reader.

Solidarity has re-entered the global zeitgeist with resounding force in the last decades and is especially urgent to consider today. Yet this concept – both a potent ideal and a slippery notion – is one of the least analysed within the arts. Why? It is perhaps because colonialism, Neoliberalism, hyper-individualism and Western-centred concepts of art have eroded visions of a care-based society. Creating a fair and vital social fabric inspired by mutual dependencies between living beings and all entities including fauna, flora, air, land and water, is fundamental for our collective existence. A critical toolbox with intersectional perspectives is needed to examine this minefield and reveal meaningful and inspiring narratives that can guide our future.

Working with these complexities, this Reader considers the agency that artists, collectives and art institutions have generated from the 1970s to today to build the radical imaginaries of care and solidarity needed to transform the conditions of our collective existence in the face of local and global crises. Presenting new and historical material, the Reader narrates a series of stories of solidarity across geographies in relation to emergencies connected to ecocide, femicide, genocide, migration, neocolonialism, inter-religious conflicts, class divisions and heteronormativity, amongst others. It also gives a central place to Indigenous perspectives rarely considered when discussing solidarity in the arts.

Eszter Szakács
Eszter Szakács is curator, onderzoeker en promovendus aan de Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, waar ze deelneemt aan het project IMAGINART-Imagining Institutions Otherwise: Art, Politics, and State Transformation. Eszter maakt deel uit van het curatorenteam van het grassroots kunstinitiatief OFF-Biennale Budapest, waarmee ze op documenta vijftien lumbung-lid was. Samen met Naeem Mohaiemen is ze redacteur van de binnenkort te verschijnen bloemlezing Solidarity Must Be Defended (tranzit/hu, Van Abbemuseum, SALT, Tricontinental en Asia Culture Center). Ze was een teamlid van de East Europe Biennial Alliance - mede opgericht door OFF-Biennale Budapest - die gezamenlijk de Biënnale van Kiev in 2021 heeft samengesteld. Eszter werkte als curator en redacteur bij tranzit/hu in Boedapest tussen 2011 en 2020. Haar onderzoek en schrijven gaan over het organiseren van kunst aan de basis buiten de kunstinfrastructuur van de staat.

Radio Alhara
Het online radiostation Radio Alhara werd gelanceerd in Palestina aan het begin van de wereldwijde lockdowns in maart 2020 en biedt een platform voor discussie, luisteren en gemeenschapsvorming. De naam, die vertaalt naar 'de buurtradio', weerspiegelt de aard van het station zelf: een hechte gemeenschap die opkomt uit de marge, maar toch open en toegankelijk is voor de wereld en grenzen en geografische obstakels overbrugt.

Mirror Soup Kitchen
Mirror Soup Kitchen weerspiegelt een gaarkeuken van een door een ramp of oorlog getroffen plaats. De recepten die daar gekookt worden, worden op precies dezelfde manier bereid en geserveerd, op precies dezelfde dag. Het ingezamelde geld komt ten goede aan deze keuken, zodat deze kan blijven koken voor mensen in nood.
Momenteel koken Jasper Roel en Jet zo lang als nodig is voor het activistische kunstenaarscollectief Kukhnia in Lviv, Oekraïne. Ze koken thuis eenvoudige, vegetarische soepen en delen die uit aan oorlogsvluchtelingen of andere mensen in nood. Dit doen ze dit nu vanuit 7 locaties in Lviv.

ART GOSS
Art Goss is een platform voor high effort art gossip, opgericht in november 2020 door kunstenaars/schrijvers L. Artimer & M. Gossamer. Art Goss publiceert kritische verhalen en observaties over instellingen, structuren en fenomenen binnen de Nederlandse culturele sector en materialiseert deze via Instagram, performances en tentoonstellingen. Geboren vanuit de ongelijkheid en geïnstitutionaliseerde gewelddadigheden van de kunstwereld, eist Art Goss roddel op als een kracht van legitieme, politieke kennisproductie. Recente presentaties omvatten de performance Curriculum Veto in Het Nationale Theater, Den Haag; de tentoonstelling Curriculum Veto in Mistral Amsterdam; bijdragen aan groepstentoonstellingen en seminars bij onder andere DAI, Fotodok, Frappant Galerie Hamburg, de Appel Amsterdam, Hotel Mariakapel, Institute for Network Cultures, Workspace Brussel en Kultursommer Hamburg.

Jue Yang
Jue Yang is een kunstenaar, schrijver, filmmaker en criticus gevestigd in Rotterdam.

Gizem Üstüner
Performer en maker Gizem Üstüner is afgestudeerd aan de HKU in Utrecht. Haar werk gaat over aspecten van artistiek werk die meestal onzichtbaar blijven, zoals stress over een visum, afgewezen financieringsvoorstellen, onevenwichtigheid van vele bijbaantjes, ongewenste concurrentie met collega's, een vermoeide acceptatie van collectieve werkspanningen, en de onvermijdelijke zelftwijfel over het onvoldoende zijn als kunstenaar terwijl ze door al dit proces gaat. Gizem richt zich op het begrijpen en herdefiniëren van deze verborgen drama's, om ze zichtbaar te maken en even belangrijk en waardevol als het resultaat van artistiek werk. Gizem was medeorganisator van het Platform BK Solidariteitskamp en is medeoprichter van No.More.Later.

Rosa te Velde
Rosa te Velde is onderzoeker, ontwerper, docent, moeder en dochter. Van haar oma van moederskant erfde ze een grote liefde voor dingen maken, naaien, breien, spullen bouwen, maquettes/modellen maken etc. In 2019 werkte ze samen met Patricia Kaersenhout aan het tentoonstellingsontwerp van haar monumentale installatie Guess Who's Coming to Dinner Too?, hier in de Appel. Hierna vervolgde ze haar onderzoek naar de geschiedenissen van het gebouw waar de Appel nu is gehuisvest, waarbij ze kijkt naar de manieren waarop dit gebouw heeft geleefd door modernistische dromen, segregatie en gentrificatie. Momenteel werkt ze aan het opstarten van een amateurkoor waar vanaf september verzetsliederen gezongen zullen worden (om de hoek van de Appel, bij Aslan Muziekschool). Dit is een project dat deel uitmaakt van haar werk aan de Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (AHK) waar ze samen met Aminata Cairo een lectoraat Sociale Rechtvaardigheid en Diversiteit in de Kunst leidt.
