The summer issue of mister Motley #28: EN/EN Amateur en Professional investigates the boundaries between the professional and the amateur. In the world of art the distinction is emphasised, disputed or erased, but it is certainly a matter of discussion. On this theme Mister Motley is organising an evening in de Appel with artists who to an important extent find their material and inspiration in the digital culture, popular art and amateur photography. Hanne Hagenaars, the editor-in-chief of mister Motley, is in charge of the presentation of the evening.
Programme
Presentation: Hanne Hagenaars
- 7 p.m. - 7.10 p.m. Klaar van Lippe en Bart Stuart
Together they start the presentation evening with "discover the amateur in yourself".
- 7.10 p.m. – 7.30 p.m. Rein Jelle Terpstra
Rein Jelle Terpstra is showing the work “Dit is een goede plek” (This is a good place) which he created together with Maria Barnas in a psychiatric institution. The work is a diaporama, a series of slides which blend into each other (a typically amateur medium), with images in which the view of the amateur is used as the guideline.
- 7.30 p.m. – 7.50 p.m. Jonas Ohlsson
In his work as a visual artist and DJ, he borrows aspects from all sorts of sources of popular culture and DIY without making a distinction between high and low art, or professional and amateur art. During the Motley evening he takes you to various (internet) sources and places of inspiration.
- 7.50 p.m. – 8 p.m. Marcel Dzama, secret short films
- 8 p.m. – 8.20 p.m. Break
- 8.20 p.m. – 8:40 p.m. Wim Noordhoek reads to you
- 8.40 p.m. – 9.00 p.m. Herman Helle
Herman Helle presents “Being There”, a comprehensive portrait of the world. It is a series of photographs which he started in 1986 and which consists of thousands of photographs and is still growing.
- 9.00 p.m. – 9.20 p.m. Bart Stuart and Klaar van der Lippe
Are you a professional or an amateur, or both at the same time? Do amateurs and professionals have much in common? A live examination shows that they do. Come and experience the contradictions for yourself. Join the game to win the title “Super Schepper” (Super Creator) of the evening.
- 9.20 p.m – 9.30 p.m. Marcel Dzama, secret short film
More about the participating artists
Hanne Hagenaars has been editor-in-chief of Mister Motley from the beginning. In addition, she organizes the General Studies programme for the Royal Academy in The Hague and is curator for the art association of Diepenheim. She is Associate Professor for Artez: her subject is the relationship between art education (VO) and contemporary art. In addition, she is a member of the jury for the Koninklijke Subsidie voor de schilderkunst (Royal Subsidy for painting).
Rein Jelle Terpstra is a visual artist and focuses on photography and projects in public spaces. He has created an archive of images of amateur photography with 55,000 images which are regularly published and exhibited. At the moment he is working on a book about perception, memory and photography. www.reinjelleterpstra.nl
Maria Barnas works with text and images. She has published novels (Engelen van ijs (Ice Angels), 1997 and De Baadster (The Bather), 2000) and anthologies of poems (Twee zonnen (Two suns), 2003 and Er staat een stad op (There is a city), 2007) for the Arbeiderspers. In 2010 she published Fantastisch (Fantastic), a collection of columns for the NRC Handelsblad. Recent visual works include The Living Room which was exhibited in Klemm's Gallery, Berlijn.
Jonas Ohlsson is a visual artist, musician and DJ. As a result of his direct and associative style of working, no subject is safe – from political and social subjects, popular culture to sex, drugs, life and death.
Marcel Dzama is a visual artist and creates dioramas, drawings, sculptures, paintings and films in which he deals with the most grisly subjects in the fairytale world of the imagination. He lives and works in New York.
Bart Stuart and Klaar van der Lippe are both artists. Their task is to ask difficult questions and provide different answers. They think about regions and buildings. “We look for the outside world. We don’t want to make art to be shown in a museum, but we want to show how things can be done differently in our productions.”
Herman Helle is a visual artist and designer. He made models for Rem Koolhaas, urban planners and various municipalities. Since 1998 he has been part of the theatre group Hotel Modern. In 1986 he started on the series of photographs Being There, a comprehensive portrait of the world which now consists of thousands of photographs and is still growing. www.hotelmodern.nl
Wim Noordhoek is a writer and radio producer. He can be heard every week in the VPRO’s programme “De Avonden” (The Evenings), as a reporter, discussing exhibitions and talking to Arnon Groenberg. You can read his column every day.
