Monica Bonvicini, Liliana Moro & Grazia Toderi "Monica Bonvicini, Liliana Moro & Grazia Toderi"
de Appel, Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 10, Amsterdam
‘From 10 September through 31 October, De Appel will present three Italian women: Monica Bonvicini, Liliana Moro and Grazia Toderi. De Appel has followed the work of these three artists for quite some time and is now presenting it site by site. Monica Bonvicini makes video installations. She uses existing film material (often from Italian, French and German auteur films) severed from its original meaning. Technically speaking, the edited images are simple, static and often in black-and-white. The sound is separate and is sometimes synchronic. Bonvicini makes blunt pronouncements about architecture and men. Wallfuckin' (1995) and Destroy She Said (1998) are both about how women feel confined in spaces built by men. Liliana Moro produces subtle works that contain elements from the fantasy world of children: toys, masks, picture books or cardboard building blocks. Moro will be showing three works at De Appel. La Fidanzata di Zorro (Zorro's Fiancée, 1999) is about the uncertain waiting of a women whose mouth has been laced shut. De Clowns is a series of pencil drawings shown as a portrait gallery of the artist's family, without any rhetoric. A third work was made especially for De Appel: an installation dedicated to Anne Frank as a symbol of devotion to life. Grazia Toderi has chosen video as the means that most closely approaches her own view of the world. She pays unusual, almost hypnotic attention to small actions, and enlarges a single detail until the whole is completely forgotten. Her videos show repeating movements in a fixed setting, thereby achieving a paradoxical use of the medium. Toderi will be showing two works: Le Orbite del Principle Otto (1998) and Il Fiore delle 1001 Notte (1998).’ (Press release De Appel) Catalogues: Monica Bonvicini, 1999. Text: Jan Ralske.
