Waveness with Maartje Fliervoet

Are oceans as alien to us as they seem?
Despite of their dynamic qualities oceanic movements turn out to be very structured. Computerised buoys fail to register many of these movements. It seems to be our thinking and reliance on technology that reduce them to formlessness.
Visit us Wednesday to Saturday between 14:00 and 18:00 for the presentation of Waveness including new work of Maartje Fliervoet made in collaboration with different families living in Amsterdam Nieuw-West.
With Waveness Fliervoet brought seawater and micro-algae in contact with fibre-based photo paper and sunlight, these actors take over and form their own images in a combined response to her initial action. The multihued paper surface undulated, water moved on to its lowest points and gradually her influence faded.
During 24H Nieuw–West, many participants have made similar photogrammes with Sloterplas water, broadening Waveness’ perspective to include fresh waterbodies and questions of human control.* Four of these prints have been scanned and woven into jacquard fabrics, as part of the installation.
*At the current location of the Sloterplas in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, created in 1956, there used to be a natural lake called Slootermeer, empoldered to claim land in 1644.
Waveness is part of the education programme of De Appel. During 2019, the education programme explored the potential of working with textile in different communities in Amsterdam Nieuw-West through various contemporary art practices. What role can textile work play in different kinds of communities? What can we eventually learn from each other through (working with) textile? With a focus on the social aspects of textile work we aimed to bring craftsmanship and heritage together to create new stories, new connections and new (potential) communities.
This project has been developed in collaboration with LAPS, Lectorate Art & Public Space (Gerrit Rietveld Academie).
Maartje Fliervoet exhibited at A.VE.NU.DE.JET.TE Institut de Carton and Wiels CAC, Brussels, Grimmuseum, Berlin, Lokaal 01 Antwerp, Kunstverein Göttingen and SKOR, Amsterdam. From 2012 to 2018 she was a tutor in the honors program ART and RESEARCH of the UvA and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. A selection of residencies in which she participated: The Pompgemaal Den Helder (2018/19) Frans Masereel Center (2016), Air Berlin Alexanderplatz (2013), Lokaal 01 Antwerp (2011) and Wiels CAC (2010) .Maartje Fliervoet is the initiator of Manifold Books, founded in 2015 (manifoldbooks.tumblr.com).
