OA/AO with Tony Cokes

10.09.2018
18:30–21:00
de Appel, Schipluidenlaan 12, Amsterdam

OA/AO (onder andere/among others) is an ongoing series of screenings, presentations, and conversations that focus around a single work or object. These intimate gatherings feature a range of special guests who are invited to talk about a recent project, idea, or thing, followed by a conversation in which we encourage audience participation. Through these short presentations, De Appel assembles an ongoing collage of the current critical and creative world, asking invited guests to think through and articulate a position towards the material they present, among others.

Doors open at 18.30, programme starts at 19.00. De Appel’s autumn 2018 season of exhibitions and programmes focuses on music as discipline and considers the element of sound across a range of artistic practices. This first OA/AO of the season features a rare video essay by artist Tony Cokes, followed by a conversation. The video project "1!+ (a dubstep primer)" (2014, 37:00) reconsiders UK Dubstep through various theoretical and historiographic frameworks including Jacques Derrida's "hauntology," Paul Gilroy's "Black Atlantic," and the ghostly resonances of dub and reggae. Using found footage, overlays of audio and text, and an at-turns ambient and throbbing soundtrack, the work makes a unique and rigorous inquiry into the social history of the musical genre. Preceding and following the programme, a selection of Cokes’ videos that deal with the art and politics of music will be on view. If you would like to attend, please send an rsvp to ( reservations [at] deappel.nl )

Tony Cokes makes video and installation works that reframe appropriated texts to reflect upon capitalism, subjectivity, mediation, knowledge, and pleasure. Sound always functions as a crucial, intertextual element, complicating minimal visuals. Cokes' works have been exhibited internationally at venues including the 10th Berlin Biennale: REDCAT, Los Angeles; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, NY; MACBA, Barcelona; SF MOMA; ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany; and La Cinémathèque Française. Cokes is a Professor in Media Production and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. He lives in Providence, RI. see also: ( OA/AO with Herman Asselberghs ) ( OA/AO with Raqs Media Collective ) ( OA/AO with De Appel Curatorial Programme )
