Twintig kunstenaars uit tien landen werden door De Appel uitgenodigd deel te nemen aan de tentoonstelling, op basis van een gedicht van Raymond Russel uit 1897: 'Sometimes a momentary reflection comes to life In the view set into the base of the pen-holder Which my wide-open eye is pressed against very close, just functionally back from it The view is a very slender photograph Completely invisible if one relies On the depth of the glass, this piece of which is frosted on one of its sides, in this case the back But it all swells up when a more curious eye Comes close enough for a lash at times to touch.' Antje von Graevenitz schreef in haar artikel 'Intimiteit en distantie' in de catalogus van Through the viewfinder: 'De meeste van [deze kunstenaars] zijn nog ver onder de veertig jaar. Daarmee horen ze bij de generatie kunstenaars die van het empathische geloof van het modernisme, om via kunst een betere wereld te kunnen bouwen, afstand hebben genomen. Elke bombarie vinden ze verdacht en veeleer is hun werk een uitnodiging om van dichtbij notie van de wereld te nemen. Of het in zijn visie dan uitdijt tot illusionaire grootte is een andere kwestie.
