*Pay It No Mind – queer night at De Appel
Museum night 2019
Celebrating non-binary identities and transgender activism at De Appel.
During Museum night we highlight the stories of two world famous transgender activists at the table of Patricia Kaersenhout’s Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner Too? Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera fought for civil rights and played a vital role in the Stonewall riots, 50 years ago, which produced the first pride marches in 1970. The “P.” in Marsha P. Johnson’s name famously stands for ‘Pay it no mind’, something she would tell people who attacked her for not being gender conforming.
The night is dedicated to non-binary identities and queer people of colour. Together we honor the fight and struggles of transgender women from the past but also from the present, through queer stories, music, vogue performances and a drag workshop! We are so happy with the amazing people who are part of our program and a huge thank you goes to: Trans United, House of Vineyard the first ballroom house in the Netherlands, Wantee Teelapa & Shishani, Patricia Kaersenhout and the famous Amsterdam drag queens Miss Envy Peru & Nancy Goreng!
Join us in celebrating our queer bodies and identities as a form of protest!

ALL NIGHT De Appel Archive presentation
Departing from the subjects of identity, gender and forms of representation, De Appel archive will screen two videos:
- Portrait of Robbie (date unknown) by Joshua Janssen a video of a man putting on make-up in a mirror image.
- Solarium by Luciano Castelli is a video documentation of Castelli’s exhibition at De Appel (1975), which reflects on themes as gender, sex, and identity. The photos in the video show men and women, photographed in various positions. They have dark eyes, thin, bodies, pale as
wax, bright-red mouths, and spiky hair. But not all of them are what they seem to be.
