de Appel Kiosk at the Dappermarkt

Inspired by friends in the lumbung who still run lumbung kiosk and other initiatives by artists to sustain their collectives and participate in small economies, de Appel launches an experimental kiosk in collaboration with artists Metti (Waèl el Allouche) and Espacio Estamos Bien. The artists will be developing and selling merchandise as well as reflecting on practices of exchange and barter in market economies. We see urban markets as vibrant places where diverse cultures gather becoming hubs for social interaction, community building, and cultural exchange. De Appel also wishes to socially engage in places other than art institutions to meet people through and with artistic practices without necessarily making a distinction between art and society.
Metti, created by Waèl el Allouche and inspired by the role of the matriarch or grandmother, is a cultural initiative rooted in food, knowledge, and communal exchange. Metti will contribute to the market as a living archive by sharing global South food staples, handcrafted goods, and knowledge through storytelling, ingredients and personal artefacts. Espacio Estamos Bien’ project DOOS ¡No hacemos moneda falsa! is an attempt to create an alternative exchange space that emphasizes non-monetary interactions and cooperative values. Through curated boxes sent by friends of the collective and collaborators from around the world, objects will be exchanged using creative bartering methods such as favors, secrets, and spontaneous offerings.
The first pilot edition of de Appel Kiosk are held with Metti on Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 October.
