De Appel Arts Centre is looking for two Curatorial Programme Mentors supported by Ammodo1 , for the upcoming Curatorial Programme trajectory (January 2023 – November, 2023).
About the Curatorial Programme at de Appel
Each year a group of up to six participants, chosen for their potential to transform their field and de Appel, come together to learn from each other, from their advisors, from the rich context where they are immersed, and from the travels they undertake together. Their 10-month curriculum concludes with a collectively organised exercise in making art public. This unique learning platform founded in 1994 has established a track record of internationally recognized innovation in exhibition making and institution building.
The mentorship is intended to ensure ‘good chemistry’ in the process (curriculum) and the new potential to include a commission of a new artwork within the final outcome/exhibition. One of the focal points of the Curatorial Programme 2023 is how to look at curating as a structure rather than only as exhibition making. As well as how institutions are structured, how they operate, how they fundraise, how autonomous they are as a consequence of those and other conditions. Amongst others, central questions will be: how to work together? How do institutions navigate relationships with artists, community and stakeholders?
What we seek
We seek two artists, curators or collectives to support the participants of de Appel Curatorial Programme 2023 with experiencing different perspectives of artistic, curatorial and institutional production as well as producing their final public outcome.
A jury composed of de Appel team members and incoming CP participants will meet the finalists, where both parties determine whether they are mutually compatible. Each mentor will receive 5000 euro as fee and will be expected to have up to ten meetings and workshops with the CPs spread out over the course of eight months. A small budget will also be available for travel and fees for invited guests.The primary language of communication will be English.
Position 1: Mentor for reflection and writing
This mentor will be expected to discuss with the group their experiences in regard to the different exhibitions and institutions they will be visiting as part of their curriculum as well as help the group with their writing skills. They will guide them through the use of writing as a reflection tool to think about what they are learning, as well as support them in producing the writing material for their final Commissions project.

Position 2: Mentor for guided visits
This mentor will be required to take the participants on one multi-day trip to see exhibitions, institutions and artists that they deem necessary today. In addition to this they will share their research and practice with the participants during workshop sessions, as well as discuss the preparations leading to the CPs Commissions.
