FOOTNOTES #6
Renée Green; Choice from the archive by Evan Ifekoya
Location: 1st floor showcase at De Appel, Schipluidenlaan12, Amsterdam
During Evan Ifekoya’s exhibition A SCORE, A GROOVE, A PHANTOM, A CONGREGATION, De Appel will present a selection of archival documents from collaborations with artist Renée Green.
Renée Green’s exhibition Certain Miscellanies took place at De Appel in 1996. The exhibition covered one floor of De Appel’s two-story exhibition space, with the other taken by a solo of Rirkrit Tiravanija. These duo-solos were a common exhibition structure taken by De Appel at the time, and allowed for connections and comparisons between different artistic processes to reveal themselves.
Certain Miscellanies was a configuration of storylines and research from Green’s earlier presentations, and consisted of photographs, scenography, furniture, and a CD-ROM that the audience could interact with. One of the spaces was dedicated to activities of Green’s long-term project Free Agent Media (FAM). FAM explored art’s complex relationship to capital, and dissects the tendency to see "the museum", "the academy" or "the market" as the designated spaces for artistic production and display. Under the name FAM, Green has produced books, films, objects, and exhibitions.
A public discussion between Green and critic Diedrich Diederichsen followed the opening of Certain Miscellanies. The digitalized audio of this conversation is available for listening at De Appel. In addition to the archival and audio documents of the exhibition the original “dummy” from the publication Certain Miscellanies: Some Documents*, which was produced after the exhibition, is available.
*Published by Daad, Berlin and De Appel, the book won the Dutch book prize The Best Dutch Book Designs / De Best Verzorgde Boeken in 1994. The publication was edited by Edna van Duyn, in close collaboration with Renée Green, and designed by Irma Boom.
