Amsterdam Art Weekend offers contemporary art enthusiasts a four-day programme with more than 100 events at over 50 different locations. In addition to presenting the solo-exhibition by Hiwa K, To remember, sometimes you need different archeological tools, the archival exhibition Footnotes #2 and the Tapes presentation by Jeroen Vermandere, De Appel (co-)organises and hosts a number of special events throughout the Amsterdam Art Weekend programme.

Opera on the Street Corner centres on Zorka Wollny's (Poland, 1980) Impossible Opera, a newly commissioned work resulting from a long-term collaboration between Wollny, the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art, and local choirs and individuals. This hour-long musical performance draws inspiration from protests and demonstrations, and from conflicts between order and anarchy, dissent and consent. Enjoy a screening of Impossible Opera. Afterwards, Edit Molnár (director of the Edith-Russ-Haus) discusses the work with Wollny.

Humans of the Institution Symposium

In partnership with Curatorial Practice (UiB), Frontier Imaginaries, DAI Roaming Assembly, Amsterdam Art Weekend and Veem House for Performance

Humans of the Institution presents an international three-day gathering created to look closely at who ‘makes the present’ by foregrounding the freelancer in the arts and within globalising dynamics more broadly. The symposium is organised by curators, based on experience, and encourages the participation of artists, writers, journalists, designers among other 'content producers' and freelance workers.

Re-enactment Performance Massive Trance by Marien van Oers

Performance In the framework of the presentation Tapes by Jeroen Vermandere

In collaboration with performer Arie de Fijter, Jeroen Vermandere made a re-interpretation of the work Massive Trance by Marien van Oers (1955-2013). The performance is based on a 1983 audiocassette with a tight protocol. Attached instructions describe the setup and technique. The duration is 30 minutes and the piece consists of a constant repetition of sound for the purpose of achieving a state of trance.

In the framework of Hiwa K's exhibition

Make music together with the Kurdish-Iraqi brothers Nariman and Monir Goran and discover Hiwa K’s exhibition. The brothers will engage with the theme’s of the exhibition through their musical and poetic language. The songs and lyrics will act as a memory tool. Together we will share individual or collective memories and investigate how time, place and culture intermingles with music. Some part of this session will be in Dutch, Kurdish or English. Participation free of charge, with a valid entrance ticket to the exhibition.
