Leading up to the performance event Midsummer Night Scream on September 26, de Appel arts centre presents the short movie An Emotional Sherpa by Norvegian artist Trygve Luktvasslimo in the week before the event. Luktvasslimo is one of three artists that will participate in the event and the movie functions as a kind of introduction to the evening.
Throughout a day, An Emotional Sherpa follows success-driven stage artist and self-appointed prophet, Thor. Together with his daughter Sandy Bell (played by Elise Paixão) he has formed a prosperous musical duo, which has brought the small family to the attention of the world. Thor (Trygve Luktvasslimo) is accelerating towards a hazy goal of infinite self-fulfillment, while Sandy Bell is growing fed up with the state of alienation she is baked into, and she's about to give her father and everybody else a piece of her prophetic mind. The film also introduces Ocean (Suzana Borges), a glamorous TV presenter. In an intimate monologue, Ocean recounts glimpses of the rupture she experiences between her inner life and her discontinuous public persona.
On one side, you have the pretence that spiritual anchoring is just another tameable element of self-construction. On the other side, you have the acknowledgment that the visions and dreams that personal success feeds off need to tap into an abyss of non-control. An Emotional Sherpa belongs to a series of films, performances and texts, which looks at how this space at the brim of a black hole is navigated.
The film is 22 mins.
