“Spinoza in Las Vegas” is a production by Tate Modern-London

“Spinoza in Las Vegas” is the first theatre piece by American artist Sturtevant; a forerunner of 'appropriation art'. Since the mid 60’s she has been doing the works (often iconic works) of other artists, such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol. By means of her conceptual thinking she probes the high power of repetition.

Set in the excess world of Las Vegas, with its slot machines, dancing girls and strip lights, this live work stages the adventures of Spinoza; radically displaced into our cybernetic world. Alongside Spinoza, the performance features a dummy, a ventriloquist, a chorus line of teeny-boppers, rappers and even some FBI guys. Although full of fun and folly there is present a critique of our current high tension issues and a forceful critique of Spinoza’s work.

“Spinoza in Las Vegas” takes place in the context of the manifestation “My Name is Spinoza”, an initiative of the Amsterdam Spinoza Circle, concept and organisation by SKOR (Foundation Art and Public Space), in collaboration with Foundation Spinoza Centre. Amsterdam.
