THE OLD BRAND NEW

A monthly lecture series in the English language in Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam revolving around the concept ‘new’ in the arts.

14 April: NEW CENTRE

With R. Radhakrishnan, André Lepecki and Trinh T. Minh-ha

For over four centuries the dominance of Western philosophy and culture has been questioned and criticized by thinkers of every gender and denomination. Persistent impulses from feminist and postcolonial theory have since discredited patriarchal and Eurocentric ways of looking at the world. The omnipresence of the notion of globalization, and the shift of the economic power centre to the BRIC-axis, have led to the impression that we live in a world in which borders and ‘cultural gaps’ no longer matter. The idea that the tensions between centre and periphery – in both a geographical, a socio-political and cultural sense –, no longer play a significant role, has gained ground. To what extent has the field of tension between ‘us’ and the ’other’ actually been abolished in the domain of the arts?
