Schlingensief Live! β cancelled
Goethe-Institut, Amsterdam
POSTPONED INDEFINITELY
On Thursday 21 February, the notorious Berlin-based professional provocateur, theatre maker, cinematographer, talkshow host and light-hearted politician Christoph Schlingensief (1960 Oberhausen), will make a one-night appearance at the Goethe Institute in Amsterdam. From 1983 to 1986 Schlingensief was assistant to the film maker and media artist Werner Nekes and during those years also taught at the Düsseldorf art academy. His much discussed activities in the way of films, theatre pieces, operas or daily actions uncomfortably mirror contemporary society. What to think of the controversial trilogy “Hundert Jahre Adolf Hitler” (1989), “Das Deutsche Kettensägenmassaker”(1991) and “Terror 2000” (1992) about the collective German and Austrian past, but also his performance “Bitte Liebt Österreich” (2000), a staged Big Brother with asylum seekers in which the dividing line between fiction and reality evoked violent reactions. The mad parody “Freakstars 3000” despite the controversy surrounding it, was successfully premiered during the Hofer Filmtage in Germany and its screening during the 2004 Rotterdam Film Festival drew international acclaim.
