‘For quite some time, De Appel has given attention to alchemistic symbolism in contemporary art (the fine arts and literature). The German/American artist Rebecca Horn will be showing a number of older films related to this idea on Monday evening, April 1: La Ferdinanda - Sonate für eine Medici-villa (1981), Einhorn (1971), Hahnenmaske (1973), Kakadoomaske (1973), Bleistiftmaske (1973), Berlin-Übungen (1975) and Der Eintänzer (1978)>]. She will also give a lecture on the reason why she deals with themes from ancient alchemistic literature in her films and installations. For Horn, alchemy is a source of inspiration from which she draws, and for this reason it cannot be understood as a dogmatic value system. The presentation, with discussion, will take place in the Film Museum (Roemer Visscherstraat entrance) and will begin at 8 pm (...).’ (Press release, De Appel)
