Kleinefenn / Rahmann "Travelling in camera"

de Appel, Brouwersgracht 196, Amsterdam

‘We rode from Kiel to Munich with the Intercity 613. Our compartment was completely dark and transformed into a camera by a hole in the middle of the covered window. It seems like a moonlit scene: the world outside, tinted like a reflexion in dark water, is inverted inside on all surfaces of the compartment. The picture is a tryptich. The ground extends from the ceiling to the middle of the compartment walls into horizon, while the sky lights the seats and the floor. What is inside the room soars through the picture. Due to the high speed of the train the contours of the landscape appear as layers, gliding behind one another, suggesting a vision of depth. At the curves the image inside gyroscopes. The picture renders a continuous movement, coming to halt in the stations with the train. Pure movement, without gravity, in a rhythm that could easily generate a flow of thoughts. The train (...) is equipped with two special compartments that are transformed into cameras in which you can sit. Projected images of the landscape and structures that the train is passing will be projected on the walls. Your eyes will have to adjust to the available light. You may travel with a normal second class ticket and - for a maximum effect- should not sit in the compartments with more than four people at the time.’ (Invitation De Appel)
