‘Silvia Steiger (born 1940 in Linz, West Germany; living in the Netherlands since 1964) works on projects which extend themselves over periods of several weeks to a number of months. These projects or investigations consist of daily observations of a single object or area/terrain. In the course of time, concentration on one object changes the way in which it is presented: vision is altered by time. In the current project, the dunes near Castricum serve both as the starting point as well as - in the beginning - the object of observation. The selection of this area is purely subjective, and simultaneously excludes everything outside of the zone, while including all potential transactions, operations and observations within the area. The process of the investigation has the effect of shifting attention from the dunes in general to more specific aspects of / in the region. It is as though increasingly smaller concentric circles were being drawn until attention is focused on a certain area. Time and coincidence play an important role in the process. There is no pre-determined plan or definition of goal - there is a beginning, but no definitive ending. The work is now in the intermediate stages, and has produced annotations and photographs up until now.’ (‘Project with Silvia Steiger. Interrim report on activities in the dunes near Castricum.
