Morgan Thomas "Lecture"
de Appel, Brouwersgracht 196, Amsterdam
'Morgan Thomas gave a lecture in De Appel about the F.A.R. Foundation for Art Resources Inc., Los Angeles. At the same time, a conference about alternative spaces, entitled Beyond Survival, took place in New Orleans. The discussions were organised in workshop sessions. The subject was about the place alternative art institutions occupy within the general art scene in the U.S. - contentwise as well as organisational. This conference led to the initiative to set up a telex communication between the Netherlands and New Orleans. De Appel invited some other similar Dutch centers to send in formation about their organisations. Participants were: The Bank / VideoHeads (Amsterdam), Corps de Garde (Groningen), Apollohuis (Eindhoven), Agora (Maastricht) and De Appel (Amsterdam). Some artists made use of this telex communication: Harrie de Kroon, Johan Cornelissen, Sylvia Steiger, Hetty Huisman and Eric Gidney. Since the telex machine was rented only through the 9th of April, the day of the lecture, the second message, sent by airmail, reached us a few days later.’ (De Appel, 1 (1981) 1, p. 6.)
