βThis work is about sentimentality. This work is about blind children and alcoholism among adults. This work is the cushion supporting the fragile head of beauty. This work is closely tied to my other work by virtue of its obscurity, which in the end is rather humiliating. The obscurity of the work is like a lie thatβs easy to maintain, but that is also the source of great humiliation (later on). The obscurity is the silent remembrance of that which has become difficult to hear (sentimentality).β (David Salle, invitation De Appel, July 1980.)
