Reading Group: Learning Community

Let’s get together to read, talk, and think about the pleasures and challenges of community and the importance of learning collectively.

Over the course of six meetings, led by Curatorial Programme participant rori of the Brussels-based cooperative Level Five, we will read parts of Paulo Freire’s book Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Teaching Community by bell hooks. These collective reading sessions are not meant for specialists or insiders: everyone brings their knowledge and experience to the table, working towards a shared understanding of the issues at hand—which does not have to imply consensus. We will use English versions of the texts but they are widely translated, so bring your own in your preferred language. English will be the main language of conversation, though contributions in other languages are possible and appreciated. It is advised to read the assigned chapter for each session beforehand, so that we can focus on re-reading and jointly discussing the text.

It is encouraged to follow all the sessions but no worries if you cannot make it to one. You are welcome to join even if you can only make it to one or two sessions. Please note there is a limited capacity for these sessions.
