Archive Hours: Sharing Methods – Archival Consciousness
14:00–17:00
de Appel, Tolstraat 160, Amsterdam
Join us for the fourth and last workshop in a series initiated by de Appel and Archival Consciousness. In the workshop we share archiving methods with fellow archivists in cultural institutions, community spaces, social movements, artists' archives, and research archives.
de Appel Archive has functioned as a laboratory for rethinking the ways we read, display and share cultural archives. Starting as a documentation centre in the early days of de Appel, the archive has taken many forms across different spaces. Beyond documenting de Appel's own history, the archive reflects the evolution of information technology over the last 30 years, mirroring shifts since the start of the World Wide Web.
The Archive has become a space for experimentation and critical reflection on our collective memory infrastructures and for learning as a form of liberation. Within the archive, we can observe and engage with the entire life cycle of data, data creation, curation, preparation, transformation and publishing. Through the archive we can also analyse in detail what is the cost of the digital and the physical archive. Today we see an increasing emphasis on digitization without adequately addressing the complexities of maintaining digital collections. While paper ages slowly, the digital ecosystem is constantly changing. Who bears the burden of these costs, besides the environment? And how long can we sustain our practice and memories?
