Salon O

On 24 October, from 5 to 7pm, Paul van der Velde and Bert Jansen will give a talk about Salon O, an art space in Leiden from 1979-1981 that showed performances, installations, photography, film and video. The founders of Salon O, Paul van der Velde & Bert Jansen kept close contact with Wies Smals and Josine van Droffelaar in de Appel. Artists like Dale Frank, General Idea and Michel Cardena have a clear overlap in the programme of Salon O and de Appel’s. During the talk, Paul an der Velde and Bert Jansen will launch a new publication about Salon O.

Salon O was an art space in Leiden from 1979 to 1981 that featured performances, installations, photography, film and video. The founders of Salon O, Paul van der Velde and Bert Jansen archived the paper artifacts (press, photographs and publications) in five binders. The house style was designed by Anthon Beeke.

Between Wednesday 9 October and Thursday 21 November, Salon O is Archive in Residence. The archive is available to the public on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 2 to 6pm. You are welcome for a unique view into the archive.

Archive in Residence
In this program, we invite other archives to find shelter for a short period of time. At de Appel these smaller, forgotten, remarkable or extraordinary cultural archives are open to the public. The Archive in Residence will be hosted by de Appel's archivist (Nell Donkers) and Archival Consciousness (Mariana Lnari and Remco van Bladel). They will explore how to deal with data, materials, the physical and the tactile, and benefit from opening up and being public and discussed.
