Paola Siri Renard adds a second tentacle to super feelings and responds to the material residues of blue light and sand left by Jota Mombaca and Tessa Mars at the close of episode 1. what will you be then Oneiroi? – glamour consists of a series of sculptural mutants, washed up gently on the sandy floor and hanging in the Aula’s airspace. The ‘Oneiroi’ of the episode’s title refers to the winged daemones (spirits) of Greek mythology. Each night the messengers were believed to carry dreams to mortals through two gates: one made of horn bringing truthful and prophetic dreams and the other of ivory, bringing only false and meaningless dreams.

Paola Siri Renard describes her works as ‘test instruments.’ Architectural motifs and mythological elements such as scrolls, shells, horns and acanthus leaves – a hermaphrodite plant – interweave in Renard’s sculptures. Their forms suggest exoskeletons, fossils and cocoons, enlarged to a human scale and inviting touch. For what will you be then Oneiroi? – glamour Renard creates a new series of support structures including metal armatures and ropes to anchor the sculptures in de Appel’s Aula.

‘In Greek Mythology, Apollo tried to kidnap Acantha. As she scratched his face, he transformed her into a spiny plant, the Acanthus, reducing her to a contemplative, unreachable thing.’

– Paola Siri Renard

On 29th September 2022, Paola Siri Renard invites artist Mira Mann, accompanied by musician Sol-i So, to activate what will you be then Oneiroi? – glamour with a performance by Mann: let me tell you en detail (songs of the underwater palace). Working with voice, Soribuk drum and movement, Mann draws on a Korean folk tale, the Sugungga (The Song of the Underwater Palace), one of five orally transmitted Pansori ‘epics’ that emerged in the seventeenth century. Following this, episode 2 is open for ten consecutive days at de Appel, Friday 30 September – Sunday 9 October 2022, 12:00-18:00.

About the artists

Paola Siri Renard is an artist based in Paris and Ghent with Martinican and Swedish roots. Renard defines her sculptural practice as ‘micro-architectures’, transcribing and rescaling elements from Western classical architecture, Greek Mythology and natural forms. In her sculptures, geological processes such as sloughing and fossilisation mutate and interact with ornamental motifs. Renard’s work reveals the insidious architectural and political structures which shape civic spaces and social interactions. In reappropriating these dominant architectural languages Renards questions the development of designed environments through the exclusion of specific identities. Renard is currently a resident at the HISK, Belgium; previously she was guest resident at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany.

Mira Mann (1993, Frankfurt am Main) lives and works in Düsseldorf. Their practice includes time based and site specific modes of working, moving image, and cross-media settings in which Mann explores fictional spaces and storytelling as a medium for visualising social structures, collective memory, and new narratives within the play of identities. Their discursive scenographies evolve around transcultural relations of human and non-human agents and the glitches they generate between experience and memory, reality and fiction. Performances and works have been shown at Kunstverein Bielefeld; Galerie D R E I, Galerie Max Mayer; Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Rosa Stern, Munich; Lantz'scher Skulpturenpark, Düsseldorf; PiK Deutz, Cologne; Urbane Künste Ruhr & Dortmunder Kunstverein, among others.

Sol-i So (1990, Jeonju) is a composer, singer and percussionist. Just as the Korean arts are fundamentally interdisciplinary, So’s artistic profile is stylistically diverse as well. So composes contemporary music with influences from traditional Korean music, dance and drama and is part of several contemporary and traditional Korean ensembles. In addition to these artistic activities, So teaches Korean singing at the Cultural Department of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Berlin and gives workshops and seminars at various locations. So received her Bachelor's degree in Korean singing and acting from the Chung Ang University in South Korea. From 2016 to 2021 she studied composition at the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music, Dresden and in 2022 completed her Master of Arts at the University of the Arts Bern.
