“IMPULSE was primarily an artist's magazine. I was an artist and everyone who worked for the magazine saw themselves as an artist producing a magazine. We had to teach ourselves the skills of editors, designers, publishers; no one designed an issue of IMPULSE who wasn’t a practicing, exhibiting artist.” (Eldon Garnet in the introduction of Impulse Archaeology, University of Toronto Press, 2005
The Canadian artist's magazine IMPULSE ran approximately concurrent to General Idea's FILE magazine, from 1971 to 1990. IMPULSE had a strong focus on art and literature. At the time, the magazine was a visual and conceptual keystone in magazine publishing. It intended to present a continuing survey of the best contemporary Canadian and international artist’s writings reflecting upon various aspects of society. Contributing editors included Sylvère Lotringer of Semiotext(e) and Willoughby Sharp of Avalanche magazine. IMPULSE published contributions by an exciting range of artists and writers, including Kathy Acker, Hans Haacke, Jean Baudrillard, William Burroughs, Colin Campbell, Marguerite Duras, Jenny Holzer, Patti Smith, Michael Snow and many others. Eldon Garnet, who took over editing IMPULSE from Peter Such in 1974, visited De Appel for a meet-and-greet earlier this year and generously donated a complete set of IMPULSE magazines and a copy of Archeology Impulse to share in De Appel Archive. Eldon Garnet exhibits his photo based work this Spring at Torch Gallery, and is continuing the IMPULSE ideas with his publishing house: http://www.impulseb.com.
