Ensemble of Memories

From 11 November until 9 December every Saturday from 14:00 - 16:00 at De Appel. RSVP required educatie [at] deappel.nl
During the activities we will cook, dance, draw and play music to activate memories. The Ensemble creates new experiences to collect and to share knowledge. Old and newly formed stories will be collected in audio recordings and they will become part of Hiwa K his exhibition.
The Ensemble of Memories is developed together with the Kurdish community and with neighbours of De Appel.
Saturday 11 November, 14:00 - 16:00
Discover together with Ishan Mohiddin and Pari Twafiq the exhibition of Hiwa K. Ishan and Pari both originally from Kurdistan-iraq and now working as professional cooks in the Netherlands. Through cooking Ishan and Pari will collect and share memories about the conflicting notions of hospitality and hostility. We will cook together Kurdish Dolma and they will share their best kept cooking secrets. Cook together with us and discover new perspective on Hiwa K’s exhibition. Due to a serie of incidents and conflicts in Irak, the planned Kurdish dance lesson will not take place. Instead the ‘Ensemble of Memories’ creates a temporary living room at De Appel. In our intimate living room Ishan and Nariman will make you feel at 'home' to talk about various dances, the Kurdish question and feelings of non-beloning. Welcome between 14:00 - 16:00! Make music together with the Kurdish-Iraqi brothers Nariman and Monir Goran and discover Hiwa K’s exhibition. The brothers will engage with the theme’s of the exhibition through their musical and poetic language. The songs and lyrics will act as a memory tool. Together we will share individual or collective memories and investigate how time, place and culture intermingles with music. Some parts of this session will be in Dutch, Kurdish or English. Saturday 2 December, 14:00 – 16:00
Join Renas Arif and Twana Tawelayi to draw different lines between the themes of Hiwa K’s exhibition. Renas is a Kurdish-Iraqi artist and friend of Hiwa K. Renas lives and works in Amsterdam but grew up in a community where storytelling was part of their daily life. Through his drawings Renas will share different stories and will connect them with the stories of our visitors. During this drawing session we will reflect upon the notions “horizontalism” versus “verticalism”. This Ensemble of Memories session will be in Dutch and Kurdish. Discover together with Roonak Faraji and Farzad Saifikaran the exhibition of Hiwa K. Roonak Faraji is a Kurdish writer and poet, Farzad Saifikaran is a photographer. Through their personal poems and photo’s they will engage with the different theme’s of the exhibition and create different moments to experience the artworks presented at De Appel.
