Publications
A presentation space like de Appel is essentially engaged in producing temporary events and does not have a collection of objects. For this reason de Appel also opts to distill tangible and permanent products from its own activities in the form of publications. Furthermore, the publications – some of which are published in co-production with publishers such as Hatje Cantz and Walther König and fellow institutes like the Kunsthalle Zürich and the Centre Pompidou – play an important role in maintaining and continuing to develop de Appel's international reputation. Up to now the publications range from the unique artists' book “The Road not Taken” by Job Koelewijn to the monographs of Andreas Gursky and Katharina Grosse which are already sold out, and the two sizeable volumes (published in 2005 and 2006) documenting the entire history of de Appel.
Overall three types of books can be distinguished in the books published by de Appel:
I. Artists' books and monographs which highlight the work of exceptional artists who have exhibited in de Appel before or are presenting work in the near future.
II. Anthologies of essays, looking in more detail at certain trends in art theory or art history, or aspects of ‘curatorial practice’.
III. Journals: ‘The Shadowfiles’, examining some unknown aspects of de Appel's activities, and the English-language journal 'F.R. David', which focuses on the status of language, writing and text in contemporary art practice.
All of de Appel publications can be ordered from bookshop@deappel.nl and from February 12 onwards bought at our exhibition space 'de Appel Boys' School'
