This FOOTNOTES presentation, shown in conjunction with Hiwa K's exhibition, traces notions of violence throughout De Appel Archive. The presentation consists of various archival documents and videos recounting how artists at De Appel have translated and addressed experiences of violence in the past. This includes instances where artists employed aggression towards the audience, but also moments when aggression turned the visitors against the artist. It also highlights how innocent objects can suddenly turn grim.
FOOTNOTES is a recurring exhibition format at De Appel. Its aim is to build upon, comment or deconstruct a motive from the main exhibition from within De Appel Archive or from an historical perspective.
