Kunstklassen
Kunstklassen originated as a direct response to the request from Comenius Lyceum (a high school for 12-18 year olds) in Amsterdam Nieuw-West to incorporate more contemporary art into their curriculum. The programme enacts this by placing contemporary art objects from de Appel’s archive directly into the classrooms.
Over a period of four months, four artworks were on view at Comenius Lyceum. Each artwork was located in a specific classroom to connect the artwork to the lessons of social studies, language, geography and CKV. Storyteller Adnan Atik and the students of group 2a went a step further and immersed themselves in the artworks. Together the students discovered surprising similarities with their lives.

The podcasts were created in collaboration with the storyteller Adnan Atik in relation to the artworks exhibited at the Comenius Lyceum from 1 December 2019 until 9 March 2020. The students explored social issues such as: migration, travel, language, identity, as well as political and social structures in our society. Big thanks go to the teachers who integrated the artworks in their lessons and a personal thank you to Florian Kruijswijk Jansen for the sounds in the podcasts but also for the integration of the project in the school structure.Â
